Learn a little about this week’s host @ShareLearning Stuart Taylor.
Please tell us a little about your background in education. Why did you decide to become involved in education? What are some of the roles you’ve had and what does your current role involve?
I have lived a bit of a varied work life. In fact I feel a bit Gen X- 9 careers! (some very short lived)…..& no, I am not an old codger J I have a few decades in education now and LOVE IT. I honestly want to make a difference; want to ‘change the future’ (sorry to be corny).
I have taught from Year 1 to Year 12…at one stage a Foundation to Year 6 class of 23 kids. Best experience ever for a teacher…but loads of work. Currently I am Assistant Principal, Director of Studies at Riverside Christian College. Our area experiences the second highest level of disadvantage in Qld so we really are in the business of making a difference in kids lives.
Who or what keeps you inspired and motivated in your work?
I love change and trying something better. I am convinced that as an education system we are training kids for a future that doesn’t exist. My motivation at the moment is to reshape what we do so that it equips kids for a future that is very different from what we currently know.
The connections through twitter keep me inspired to reach higher and do better.
What do you see as some of the biggest rewards and challenges for people working in education today?
The biggest reward is getting to hang out with kids. They are like an elixir of youth. (as I write this I am away with 28 students competing in the National Science and Engineering Challenge. I feel so energised!)
I think our challenge is to realise that kids learn without us about things they are passionate about. The internet has allowed them to do things relevant to them. Their school-life struggles to be relevant to them.
If you had the ability to make changes to the Education system in Australia, what would you do?
Get rid of NAPLAN and give the $$$ savings to each school to implement real-time diagnostics on kids. 8 years and no discernable improvements under NAPLAN….more like NOPLAN!
I’d like to become famous and have everyone fawning at my feet.
haha- I’d like us all to learn a little more..to share a little more..and have a few more connections to reach out to with those “how do you do that?” kind of question.
But seriously….famous is nice too.
